What Happened?

On August 1st, 2026, Spokane Rifle Club sustained significant damage from the Old Trails Fire (later renamed Spokane Complex Fires).

What is the status of the club?

The club is currently closed. Access to the range is limited to first responders, elected officers, insurance adjusters, and qualified advisors working on safety and cleanup.

What Ares Were Impacted?

• The north clubhouse was destroyed.
• The shotgun clubhouse was destroyed.
• The 100 yard line and some of the 100 yard baffles were destroyed.
• The 100 yard impact area eyebrow was destroyed.
• The outdoor pistol range was destroyed.
• The 200/300/600 yard berms appear untouched however are unusable due to the destruction of the eyebrow timbers at the impact area.

The indoor range is still standing but has suffered some smoke damage. We have power but no water or restroom facilities. All fans and lights are in working order. One lane is down, which needs to be repaired and some target holders need repair. Estimates are that the indoor range may become operational in short order pending city, state, parks occupation permits and mitigation of other locations at the range as well as other unknown considerations.

We know that everyone wants to see for themselves, but please do not enter the club grounds. Doing so will interfere with the process of insurance adjustment, first responders who are still doing cleanup and further fire prevention, and the advisors we need to perform assessments. There are also liability concerns with members and non-members entering a disaster area. This has already happened and those involved have been made aware of their transgressions. Let’s not have any more.

Also, let us not forget about the families who lost their homes all around the range. Give them space to access and evaluate their loss and come to terms with what happened. Looky-loos will not be welcome and may well be treated as looters. As we all experience a sense of loss, our loss pales in comparison to those families who lost their homes and all of their belongings.

What is the status of our memberships? 

Memberships are paused as of the date of the fire, August 1. Time will not accrue against your twelve months until the range is re-opened.

If you wish to renew your membership, it will add twelve months to your existing membership and provide the club with much needed revenue to support operations while we endeavor to return to normal operations.

What is the plan for reconstruction? 

The plan is to return to the same level of service that existed prior to the fire, albeit with structures more resistant to catastrophes such as the one we just experienced. This plan will be impacted by abatement requirements, insurance requirements, Washington State Parks Department requirements, state and city requirements, and consultant input (such as the NRA).

What are the steps required to achieve reconstruction?

So far as is currently known those steps are:

• Insurance adjustment process.
• EPA and asbestos evaluation/abatement, to be done ASAP.
• Cleanup by providers licensed and insured to perform disaster/fire cleanup. We are unable to accept members’ offers to assist due to insurance and state requirements, as well as liability related issues.
• Creating physical plans for reconstruction and addressing smoke related cleanup of the indoor range.
• Acquiring bids for reconstruction.
• While all of the above is going on, we need to seek additional funding. The potential sources include but are not limited to: the NRA, other shooting associations, major retailers such as Cabela’s, Sportsman’s Warehouse, North 40 and local sporting goods stores. Member donations are welcome, though not deductible for income tax purposes.

What progress has been made:

• The Board met Monday August 10th, 2026, where issues surrounding memberships were decided, status of range was discussed and plans going forward were tentatively made.
• Insurance adjusters met with the club Executive Officer on August 12th. Steve reports that in his initial interactions with the insurance adjusters, it seems plausible that we will hit our policy maximums on the Shotgun House and North Range and possibly the 100 YD and 25 YD pistol as well.
• Founding document search is in progress. That would include the original lease and plans filed with the city, state and/or parks departments.
• The NRA has been contacted and is more than willing to provide assistance and guidance.
• A press release has been created.
